Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMD)

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a moving or sliding joint that joins your jaw to your skull, which allows for chewing and speaking. If the TMJ does not function correctly, it is referred to as Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMD). TMD can be a painful condition, but fortunately Valleyview Dental can provide therapy.

Things that might indicate your TMJ is the culprit for your symptoms include:

Headaches
Limited movement of the jaw
Clicking or grating sounds in the jaw joints
Locked jaw – closed or open
Unexplained loosening of the teeth
Sore jaw and jaw pain, especially upon waking
Pain in the jaw region or in the ear (TMJ pain can feel like ear pain!)
Difficulty opening your mouth widely
Teeth grinding
Eating difficulties/changes
History of jaw injury

If you happen to be suffering from any of the above symptoms, you could benefit from seeing one of our dental professionals. The TMJ is a specialized area and not all have the skills to comfortably treat it effectively.

Our dentist examines your muscles, jaw joints, teeth and gums for signs of TMD. This includes x-rays to look at the alignment of your jaw and the condition of your TMJ. Our dentist will then discuss all findings with you before providing options for therapy.

Causes of TMD may include:

Injury
Jaw misalignment
Arthritis
Stress
Anatomical issues
Bruxism
